New England is the least devout of all 50 States. As a matter of fact, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont are at the bottom the list compiled by pewresearch.org.

The top 10 most religious states are almost all from the southern states, including Alabama at #1.

The results were based on a "survey of more than 35,000 U.S. adults who say they believe in God, pray daily and regularly go to church or other religious services."

In their profile for Maine, the results show 34% say religion is very important in their lives; 22% say they attend worship services at least weekly; 35% say they pray daily; 48% say they believe in God with absolute certainty.
