The Colby College Museum of Art has acquired a series of 100 etchings by Pablo Picasso considered to be his most significant cycle of prints.

The acquisition of the Vollard Suite was a gift from Peter and Paula Lunder, philanthropists and longtime Colby College benefactors.

Exploring themes of mythology, identity, creativity and sexuality, the Vollard Suite from 1939 is etched in a neoclassical style that Picasso adapted from his studies of classical sculpture.

It's one of only eight deluxe sets that Picasso signed in full.Never before publicly exhibited, Colby's version is the only completely signed deluxe set held by a college art museum.

A selection of prints from the suite will be on view June 2-Aug. 21. The full series will be on view at Colby in 2018. (AP)
