Teacher's salaries could be on the rise. Maine state lawmakers are considering a plan to set a minimum wage for teachers at $40,000 a year.

The Portland Press Herald reports the Legislature's Education Committee voted yesterday (Feb. 16) to endorse the proposal, which is estimated to cost about $1 million annually.

Teachers would also be required to meet higher academic requirements.

About 150 Maine teachers earn less than $40,000.
