The Maine State Police are investigating the death of a Bucksport teacher.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, the body of 46 year old Traci Merriam was recovered Sunday morning about 7 a.m. from the Penobscot River in Prospect by troopers and the Maine Marine Patrol.

McCausland said that the death is being investigated as a possible suicide. According to McCausland, it appears Merriam jumped from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge sometime during the night.  Her car was found parked along the bridge about 4 a.m. and a suicide note was found inside. An autopsy is scheduled at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.  Merriam was a fifth grade teacher at the Bucksport Middle School.
