There are currently two cases of a polio-like illness confirmed in Massachusetts by their Department of Public Heath.

According to WMTW, the disease is acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM. Four other cases are being investigated.

There have been six cases in Minnesota, where children have been diagnosed with the disease. So far, no cases have been confirmed in Maine or New Hampshire.

What is AFM? The CDC says it affects the body's nervous system, specifically the spinal cord. It can cause paralysis, and right now there is no vaccine.
