On paper, I see how this made sense. General Hospital is about a hospital (generally speaking). Doctor Strange is about a doctor. Before he became a magical superhero, Doctor Stephen Strange was a surgeon. Surgeons hang out in hospitals. General hospitals, even. Both General Hospital and Doctor Strange made their debuts in their respective mediums in 1963. It’s almost too perfect a potential crossover, frankly.

But instead of a cameo by Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, or maybe a line about a doctor who used to work at a network hospital who lost the use of his hands in a car accident or something, General Hospital went a different route. The clip above is where they wound up. This dialogue exchange comes from the October 12 episode of the long-running soap, where two characters, Ned and Olivia, talk about a potential date ... going to see ... Doctor Strange. Did you know it’s opening in theaters soon? Well, it is. By sheer and utter coincidence. What are the odds? (General Hospital airs on ABC, which is owned by Disney, which owns Marvel, which is distributing Doctor Strange.)

Doctor Strange opens in theaters on November 4. Be sure to see it with someone you love. No, better yet: Be sure to see it with someone you miss. Someone who’s so very special, if you didn’t see it with them, it wouldn’t be the same. No pressure; that’s just how I feel. Me specifically, who said this very original thought.
