Many have speculated for YEARS, they have been more than just good friends. Sesame Street said years ago that they are not gay because they're puppets and don't exist below the waist. But recently, a writer for the iconic children's program claims that they are indeed gay.

According to a report from the New York Post, Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman, who joined the show in 1984, said he based the sketches he wrote for the iconic Sesame Street duo were based on his own relationship with his partner,  film editor Arnold Glassman.

According to the Post, Saltzman said he didn't have an agenda. “I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple,” he said.

TMZ, a spokesperson for Sesame Street had a rebuttal for the claims saying, "As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends."
