The federal government honors Christopher Columbus on the second Monday of October every year with Columbus Day. The Bangor City Council on Monday (Aug. 29) voted to change the holiday in the city to Indigenous Peoples Day.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the Queen City is following "...a growing number of cities and states that have decided to shift the focus from Columbus to the people who lived here before the arrival of European explorers and colonists."
