With national reports suggesting that the price of Narcan is skyrocketing, Maine health care professionals and legislators are concerned about the increase's potential impact on addicts in the state.

Portland Fire Chief David Jackson tells The Portland Press Herald that he's seen "fairly significant" cost spikes for the opioid overdose antidote and other drugs within the past year.

Jackson says the fire department has been able to account for the rising prices in its budget, but he's concerned for the future.

Greater Portland Health CEO Leslie Clark says she's worried that addicts and families who want to obtain Narcan won't be able to afford the drug or will delay its purchase because of the price.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree says the government may need to further regulate drug prices. (AP)
