Among the over 1500 bills being proposedby lawmakers this year is one to designate Labrador retrievers as Maine’s top dog. The bill is sponsored by Sen. David Dutremble, a democrat from Biddeford.

My first question is: Do we really need an 'official state dog?' Second question is why labs? Don't get me wrong, when our kids were very young we had 2 black labs (Char & Coal) and they were awesome family dogs. However, do Labrador retrievers say 'Maine!'

I was curious about other states. Massachusetts does have an official dog and the choice makes sense: Boston terrier. Other state choices: Alsaka is the Alaskan Malamute and Maryland is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

What would you pick for an 'official state dog' of Maine? My choice would have to be Golden Retriever. After the love, first Jack and now Brady have given my family, I can't imaging having any other dog.
