Yesterday (Jan. 19) was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a National holiday with no school. However, there was a full schedule of local school sporting events. It's not uncommon for events to be schedule on holidays and this past October the Maine Principals’ Association discussed the possibility of allowing athletic competitions to be held on Sundays.

MPA Executive Director Dick Durost told the Bangor Daily News that there is no official proposal in place to pursue Sunday play.

I remember when I was in school, we couldn't have practices or games/meets on Sundays or on holidays. In high school, I remember on a Monday holiday, a coach designating me, as team captain, to make sure everybody attended an 'optional' practice that he would not be at.

I understand having to schedule games on Sundays when weather is causing havoc with schedules, but making them a regular occurrence seems like a bad idea, with families have such hectic schedules already.
