The Sierra Club Says the East-West Highway is a Bad Idea
I have been hearing about the East-West Highway it seems like forever, and now the Sierra Club says it is not the greatest idea for Maine. The environmental group actually called the proposed east-west highway across Maine one of the worst transportation projects in the United States.
The Sierra Club report took a close look at 50 of the country's best and worst transportation projects. The Sierra Club feels the privately run, four-lane toll highway through the Maine woods would have a negative impact on air and water quality and affect critical wildlife habitat. The Sierra Club also said a freight rail line parallel to the proposed route could reduce vehicle miles traveled and redirect public investments toward passenger and commuter rail. Similar ideas have been studied and rejected a few times in the past.
