FX’s The Strain has tried out a few different promotional strategies for Season 3, and its new credits might be the clearest depiction yet. The Guillermo del Toro vampire drama takes a third stab at flashy new titles, looking a bit like The Walking Dead meets American Horror Story.

Entertainment Weekly debuted the newest credits from the third FX season, arriving on August 28, and the show’s third attempt at capturing its viral gothic thrills. The show flirted with a longer opening in Season 2 as well, but according to showrunner Carlton Cuse, is moving closer to its graphic novel roots:

A good credits sequence reflects something about the character of the show, and the first couple seasons we defined the show as a graphic novel type thrill with horror elements. We felt like it would be great to create a title sequence that sold that conceptually. There’s some really talented guys at FX who wanted to take a shot at it and we loved what they came up with.

So reads the full synopsis:

As season three begins, New York City is a battleground. Written off by the federal government, the people of New York City must fight for survival on their own. The question is who will win? Humans or strigoi? Our heroes win victories, but are not winning the war. Beset by personal conflicts – betrayal, disappointment, paranoia – our group is splintering… Meanwhile, the Master is close to executing an irreversible transformation of the world. Is there still hope to save the city and humanity?

In the meantime, check out the teasers below, and stay tuned for more on The Strain Season 3 in its August 28 premiere.
