Starting this weekend is the World Baseball Classic. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s like the World Cup of soccer but with only a 10th of the fanfare. Okay scratch that, with maybe with the same amount of fanfare. The World Baseball Classic is an international baseball tournament that only rolls around every three or now I guess every four years.

The first games will be later this week and the finals almost three weeks after. I’m probably one of very few who will be watching and cheering. Not all of the major league-rs play as it happens at the same time as spring training.

Like the Olympics, players will play for their home countries. There are 16 teams that will play basically a double elimination tourney as far as I can tell until March 19.  I'm not quite sure why Puerto Rico isn't part of the US in this case but they have their own team attending. The U.S. doesn’t play until Friday March 8 against Mexico.

This is only the third go around of the World Baseball Classic with Japan winning the first two back in 2006 and 2009. Go USA!!!
