Maine health officials just confirmed Jamestown Canyon virus in Maine. According to the Bangor Daily News it's a fairly rare disease carried by mosquitoes. A resident of Kennebec County ,Franklin County and the other person in from New Hampshire became ill while in Maine. The symptoms are flu-like but can have serious complications including brain swelling or meningitis.
Centralmaine.com reports that Five Guys has signed a lease for the old Friendly’s location in Waterville. No official word on when the may open.

Powerball Product Group Chair Charlie McIntyre says the $758.7 million jackpot claimed by a ticket sold in Massachusetts is the largest grand prize won by a single lottery ticket in U.S. history. In a statement early Thursday, McIntyre also says six other tickets won $2 million apiece, and 34 others are worth $1 million. The lucky numbers for the second largest lottery prize in U.S. history were 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26, and the Powerball number was 4.
Police in Maine say a woman has died in a two-vehicle crash involving an SUV. Authorities say the crash happened around 1:12 p.m. Wednesday in Bowdoin. Police say 37-year-old Amanda Gauvin, of Lewiston, failed to stop at a stop sign. Investigators say Gauvin's car was struck on the driver's side in the intersection by an SUV driven by 29-year-old Geraldine Scanlon, of Sabattus. Gauvin died at the scene. Police say Scanlon was not injured in the crash. Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry says it's not clear why Gauvin didn't stop before entering the intersection. Police continue to investigate.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is set to announce his recommendation for the future of a national monument in northern Maine on the anniversary of the day then-President Barack Obama announced its creation. Zinke reviewed the 87,500-acre Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument by President Donald Trump. His recommendation on whether to eliminate the monument, scale it back or keep it intact was due Thursday.
Maine's congressional delegation is calling for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make emergency changes to help dairy farmers who are struggling with low prices. Democratic Congresswoman Chellie Pingree says farm milk prices have dropped nearly 40 percent in recent years, leaving New England dairy farmers in trouble.
Fishing managers are holding a series of public hearings along the East Coast about potential changes to the way they manage the menhaden fishery. Menhaden are a heavily fished species of small fish that are used as bait and fish oil. A one-armed Hollis man accused of startling neighbors by going for a stroll wearing a clown mask and brandishing a machete says it was supposed to be a prank. Thirty-one-year-old Hollis resident Corey Berry pleaded not guilty Wednesday to criminal threatening and weapons charges. Police say Berry was intoxicated but cooperative when they arrested him last month while he was sporting a machete taped to the stump of his amputated arm and a mask to copy previous clown sightings.

Police report a white nationalist who says he pepper-sprayed a demonstrator in self-defense at a rally at the University of Virginia has turned himself in. Campus police issued a statement late Wednesday saying Christopher Cantwell of Keene, New Hampshire, was taken into custody at the police department in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet says more Marine Corps divers are joining the search of flooded compartments in the USS John S. McCain and multinational search efforts at sea are continuing. Divers have found remains in the McCain but the Navy has not provided more specific information.
Qatar says its foreign minister spoke with Iran's foreign minister just before announcing its ambassador would return to Tehran. Qatar's Foreign Ministry in a statement said that Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani spoke by phone to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif. The ministry's statement said the two "discussed bilateral relations and means of boosting and developing them, as well as a number of issues of common concern."
