Republican Sen. Susan Collins' announcement about her political future is going to be made at an event in Rockport, Maine. Her office said she'll announce her decision on whether to stay in the Senate or to run for governor in Maine on Friday at an event sponsored by the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce.
A bill authored by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Susan Collins of Maine that would establish a national commission of health care experts on diabetes care and prevention is headed to President Donald Trump's desk. Shaheen, a Democrat, and Collins, a Republican, said the legislation would bring together public and private sector experts, clinical endocrinologists and others involved in diabetes research and treatment to focus on improving education, care delivery and patient outcomes.
Lawmakers and attorneys are looking at ways to reform the state's system for helping low-income Mainers in need of legal services. This year, attorneys were forced to work without pay for weeks when the state's indigent legal services commission faced a funding gap that attorneys called politicized and avoidable. The biennial budget tasked a new working group with preparing a report by Dec. 6. The group's next meeting is Thursday.
A Maine teacher who pleaded guilty to shoplifting a $14.99 blouse after winning the $1 million Global Teacher Prize is accused of violating her conditions of release by stealing a $28 dog leash. Wiscasset police tell the Bangor Daily News that Nancie Atwell received a summons for theft on Friday. Atwell had pleaded guilty to stealing a blouse in 2016 in a plea agreement that required her to stay out of trouble for two years.
Authorities in Northern California have confirmed two more deaths from the wildfires, taking the total to 23. The sheriff's office in Sonoma County, where most of the deaths have occurred, said Wednesday night that the toll there has reached 13. The other 10 deaths are dispersed across three other counties. At least 180 people are injured and hundreds have been reported missing.
A frantic Northern California woman had been calling hospitals and posting on social media for information about her mother, who had been missing since a wildfire broke out near her home. The remains of Linda Tunis were found among the charred ruins of her mobile home. Hundreds of people remained unaccounted for Wednesday. The blazes killed about two dozen people in California's fabled wine country.

A Las Vegas hospital where dozens of people are still recovering from the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history was the scene of a mini-concert Wednesday afternoon. Nurses cried while one survivor danced in his wheelchair with his daughter. Among the singers were Michael Ray and Brandon Ray, who both also performed at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, the site of the Oct. 1 shooting that left 58 dead and hundreds wounded.
