Today, September 30th, is 'National Chewing Gum Day.' Why? That's because it is William Wrigley's birthday. If he were alive today, he'd be 153 years old, being born in 1861.

Gum is a funny thing. In my day, schools didn't allow it in the building similar to the rule on hats, but I'm not sure if that is still true today.

Gum chewing by others can be annoying if someone close in proximity gnaws, cracks bubbles or spits it out where you can step on it.

Now for the positives regarding gum. Some gums give you better breath and lead to better dental health or so I've been told by my hygienist, but the gum has to contain Xylitol.

There even some studies that show chewing gum can help you concentrate. There are other benefits to chewing gum including distracting your mouth if you're trying to quit smoking and  if used during take off and landing while on a plane can help your ears "pop."

So yes, today we celebrate chewing gum!
