Maybe Leona Lewis isn't a top-tier pop contender these days, but exactly 10 years ago, she was ruling the Billboard Hot 100, and the many of the Top 20 songs of April 2008 found similar success by employing heartbreaking pop balladry.

A decade back, the likes of Jordin Sparks' and Chris Brown's beautiful "No Air," Sara Bareilles' "Love Song" and "Apologize" by One Republic and Timbaland were ruling radiowaves, and proved that not every pop hit had to skew uptempo.

Still, that's not to say there weren't plenty of dance records to enjoy: Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music," Ray J's earworm "Sexy Can I" and Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" were dominating iPod playlists far and wide.

No, there was no Drake or Ed Sheeran — and there were only hints of Taylor Swift ("Teardrops on My Guitar" was only beginning to break through). But April 2008 nevertheless proved to be a pretty solid four weeks of pop — and how could it not be when "Lollipop" was among its hits?

From Yael Naim's "New Soul" to Lil Mama's "Shawty Get Loose," check out the Top 20 songs of April 2008 — in correct order from No. 1 to No. 20 — in the playlist above.
