Data released by the Maine Secretary of State's Office demonstrates that voter registration in the state is at an all-time high, with Democrats accounting for the largest increase.

The Portland Press Herald reports unenrolled voters still lead the way in Maine at about 36 percent, but Democrats have registered more than three times as many voters as Republicans over the past year.

The data, released Thursday, shows that the number of registered Democrats jumped by nearly 16,000 in comparison to 2015. Republicans increased their ranks by more than 4,000 voters this year.

The total number of registered voters — 996,853 — is the most ever recorded in Maine and is almost 19,000 more than 2015.
