What Are Cooper’s “Dirt Donuts”?

This morning, as he was leaving for work, Cooper found these in his yard.  He calls them Dirt Donuts.  They were not there when he came home last night.  What are they?

Any ideas?  Mini-anthills?  Gopher holes?

He is pretty sure there is an easy explanation and he feels kinda' dumb for even asking what they are....
