As we are just over a week away from Veteran's Day 2017, I've been thinking a lot about our local war monuments.  How much do you really know about them?    During a recent walk, Augusta's Civil War monument caught my attention.  So, I decided to find out more about it.

According to Oshermaps.org, Augusta's Monument Park, at the corner of Grove and State Streets, is home to several memorials.  There's one for the U.S. Civil War, World War One, World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam.

Until 1879, the park was known as the Augusta Mall and was used as a muster point for local Civil War troops.  The Civil War memorial was erected in 1882 and, during the early 1900s, became an important visit for tourists on their way to the resorts of Rangeley, Moosehead Lake, the Belgrade Lakes,  and the Mid-Coast.

The granite work was done by Hallowell Granite Company, the bronze work by National Art Foundry, New York. And, it was designed by Maurice J. Power, New York

It was dedicated on September 21st, 1882 and bears the inscription:

In Honor

Of Her Heroic Sons Who Died/In The

War For The Union/And To Commend Their Example

To Succeeding Generations

This Monument Is Erected

By The

City of Augusta

A. D. 1881
