I have a question for all Augusta, Maine residents and those who maybe lived in Augusta over the years. Every night at about 9 pm there is or was a horn. It somewhat sounded like a foghorn or shift whistle like in the opening theme of the Flintstones. Over the years I’ve asked different people and have gotten different answers.
I say “was” because I used to work until about 9 pm now I’m usually out around 8 pm. If I’m working past 9pm I’m usually inside getting stuff done so I wouldn’t hear it.
I’ve tried to Google the answer to no avail. Some people have told me it’s a curfew horn for kids. I’ve also been told it’s a shift horn from a mill that no longer is open and the horn still blows for tradition. Someone has also told me it's a daily test of an emergency horn.
Any answers?
