Bangor's police chief, Mark Hathaway, yesterday afternoon (6/25) apparently shot himself in the hand. According to a press release, he did so while cleaning a newly issued weapon.

Hathaway, a 25-year veteran officer, was just chosen chief this in April.

The shooting occurred after Hathaway and other officers returned from training with new guns. The gun used in the incident was a .45-caliber semiautomatic Glock. Hathaway was treated and released from Eastern Maine Medical Center.

In the press release City Manager Cathy Conlow said:

At approximately 5:15 p.m., while officers were cleaning their new guns at the Bangor police station, Chief Mark Hathaway sustained a non-life threatening injury to his left hand in what appears to be an accidental discharge of his duty weapon.”

The shooting is being investigated.
