I have such love/hate feelings for this song.

First of all, this song is HUGE. In July, according to Rolling Stone, "Girl Crush" hit its record-breaking 11th week in the Number One spot on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. That broke a record set back in 1959. And now it has crossed over and yes, we play it on 92Moose! I am not a huge country music fan, but there are some songs that are just awesome. I like what I like, no matter the genre.

The first time I heard the song, I started out totally captivated.  The sound of song will draw you in. It drew me in. Then the lyrics started….

“I got a girl crush, hate to admit it but
I got a heart rush, ain’t slowin’ down
I got it real bad, want everything she has
That smile and the midnight laugh she’s givin’ you now.”

WHAT THE WHAT-WHAT?

This is a country song? WAY TO GO! Way to step up to the plate county music industry.  I was impressed.

I was impressed until the next verse started…

“I wanna taste her lips, yeah, ‘cause they taste like you”

WHAT? This is where I lost the ability to breathe…

“I wanna drown myself in a bottle of her perfume
I want her long blonde hair, I want her magic touch
Yeah, ‘cause maybe then you’d want me just as much
I got a girl crush, I got a girl crush.”

You have got to be kidding me? The song is about a guy?

A GUY?

Here are the rest of the lyrics…

“I don’t get no sleep, I don’t get no peace
Thinkin’ about her under your bed sheets
The way that she’s whisperin’, the way that she’s pullin’ you in
Lord knows I’ve tried, I can’t get her off my mind

I wanna taste her lips, yeah, ‘cause they taste like you
I wanna drown myself in a bottle of her perfume
I want her long blonde hair, I want her magic touch
Yeah, ‘cause maybe then you’d want me just as much

I got a girl crush
I got a girl crush, hate to admit it but
I got a heart rush, it ain’t slowin’ down.”

From what I have read it is about a woman who, after a break up, is going through the process of trying to figure what the new woman had that she did not. Been there done that. But this song just feels so…pathetic.

It is easy to find fault with just about any song on the radio. It is easy to find songs that are not portraying women in a positive way.  If we started that discussion we would be here FOREVER!

I am just reacting to this song that no matter how much I want to dislike, I hear it on the radio, I find myself singing along! I hate myself for that.

If you are the one with the broken heart, having been left and wondering what she has that you don’t...well…I don’t have anything specific to offer. ME? I would get mad, cry, get a little drunk, let myself FEEL everything. Then I would put on my big girl panties and start moving on.  But we all have to find our way. Find break up songs that are a more empowering. Carrie Underwood, Before He Cheats is the first one to come to mind…not that I would do any of that.   Beyoncé’s Irreplaceable also would top the list.
