What ya gonna do, what ya gonna do when a movie based on the COPS TV series comes for you? No, really. What are you going to do? Are you going to pay actual money to see what is quite possibly the weirdest attempt to cash in on brand recognition? Or will you stay at home and watch reruns on TruTV or whatever? Let’s be honest: Only one of these is filmed live and on location with the men and women of law enforcement.

This has to be the most bizarre plan to capitalize on nostalgia since we heard about that weird Tetris movie trilogy (which probably won’t happen anytime soon, to be honest). Deadline reports that Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer has signed on to helm a big screen adaptation of COPS, the long-running reality series that followed police officers on particularly, uh, eventful calls.

The new movie is said to be “an edgy narrative feature with a buddy comedy bent” in the vein of Lethal Weapon. But didn’t Michael Bay already do that with Bad Boys and Bad Boys 2? They even used the COPS theme song! And with Joe Carnahan directing Bad Boys 3, a competing COPS movie is kind of pointless, right? Right?!

Oh god, what a world.
