Election Day Ballot Question One: Maine Marijuana Legalization Measure

Election day is Tuesday, November 8th and while the Presidential election has been getting the most attention, Mainers will be voting on five citizen initiative questions and one bond issue. We will focus on each of these six ballot questions to help you become more informed before you go to vote.

Question One is known as the Maine Marijuana Legalization Measure. Here's how the question will appear on the ballot.

Do you want to allow the possession and use of marijuana under state law by persons who are at least 21 years of age, and allow the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, testing, and sale of marijuana and marijuana products subject to state regulation, taxation and local ordinance?

Four states already have legal recreational use of marijuana, they are Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Oregon.

Maine along with Massachusetts, California, Arizona and Nevada are voting this year to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

Those in favor of question one argue that it will help the economy and make communities safer.

Those against question one say it will take away business from local medical marijuana growers and into the hands of big business. Opponents are also concerned that pot would be easier to access for those under 21.

The latest poll shows Mainers are supporting question one 53 to 38 percent.
