Claire Foy Is Officially Your New Lisbeth Salander in ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’
The rumors were true: Claire Foy will trade in her royal garb for gothic attire. The Crown star will officially be the next Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo reboot/sequel from Sony, The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
The studio announced the news on Friday, confirming previous rumors of Foy’s casting. While we have no doubt in Foy’s abilities, and this Sunday might just secure her first Emmy win, the actress certainly has a lot to live up to. Stieg Larsson’s character was first introduced to the screen by Noomi Rapace – my personal favorite Lisbeth (controversial opinion, I know) – in the Swedish adaptation of the Millennium book series. Rooney Mara played her own version of the hacker in David Fincher’s 2011 film. It will be interesting to see how Sony’s reboot reimagines the punky character.
The new movie, helmed by Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez, will be written by Alvarez, Steven Knight and Jay Basu. The reboot oddly skips past the Dragon Tattoo sequels to instead adapt the fourth book in the series, which was written by crime journalist David Lagercrantz and based on Larsson’s notes after the original author’s death in 2004. While the book follows both Lisbeth and Mikael Blomvkist (played originally by the late Michael Nyqvist, then by Daniel Craig) through an investigation of a criminal underground, Knight revealed to Collider last year that the film version will primarily follow Lisbeth solo. The Girl in the Spider’s Web will hit theaters October 19, 2018. Until then, play a fun game of watching The Crown and imagining Queen Elisabeth with black eyeliner and chokers.
