A Maine State Trooper and a woman from Wisconsin are both recovering following a Friday morning collision on the Maine Turnpike near Wells.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, at just after 7:10 AM on Friday, Maine State Police Troop G troopers were already on scene investigating a single-vehicle crash in the median on the northbound side near mile marker 19.  Three marked cruisers were parked with emergency lights on, working to push traffic away from the scene.

That’s when another crash happened.

Police say Trooper Christopher Caldeira was sitting inside his marked 2020 Ford Explorer cruiser with lights activated when it was struck from behind by a 2023 Mercedes-Benz sedan driven by 31-year-old Priscilla Eydra Kifayatullah of Germantown, Wisconsin.

Both vehicles suffered significant damage.  Kifayatullah and Trooper Caldeira were taken to York Hospital to be checked out for possible minor injuries.

The Turnpike never fully closed, but with only one lane open, traffic backed up for about an hour. The scene has since been cleared and traffic is moving normally again.

Maine State Police were assisted by the Maine Turnpike Authority, York, Ogunquit, and Wells fire departments, along with National Wrecker Service.

The crash remains under investigation.

This crash serves as a reminder to slow down and move over when you encounter first responders or road construction crews on the I-95, or any other road, for that matter.
