You’ll Be Shocked by How Many Power Outages Maine Has Had in 2024

In Maine, we are used to dealing with some nasty weather.

This is especially true during the winter months.

Even during winters that are described as ‘mild’, we still often contend with high winds, icy rain, and flooding.  The January 1998 ice storm and the December 2023 ‘Grinch’ storm are prime examples of this type of weather.

That nasty weather is not limited to the winter, though.  We typically see at least a few really nasty thunderstorms each summer.

Our power grid has been built with the idea that we occasionally get nasty weather in mind.  That being said, it does not mean the grid is impervious to storm damage.

How Many Power Outages Has Maine Had in 2024?

How frequently has the power gone out in Maine this year?

According to an article in World Population Review, between January 1 and July 22, there were 12 widespread power outages in Maine.

In total, the power was out for 283 hours!

Most of those outages were during the storms we had in January.  A few, however, were from the severe thunderstorms that we have had to contend with this summer.

According to these figures, Maine is one of the states that has the most power outages.  With a dozen power outages this year, Maine came in 4^th place.  Louisiana came in 3^rd place with 16 power outages, Texas was in 2^nd place with 31 power outages, and with 39 power outages so far in 2024, California came in 1^st place.
