This Is the Cookie That ‘Best Represents’ Maine
While we don’t have an official 'state cookie,' it seems that this particular cookie best represents the spirit of our Pine Tree State.
We do, however, have an official ‘state treat’ — the Whoopie Pie! In 2011, the Maine State Legislature designated this delicious dessert, consisting of two soft, chocolate cake-like rounds with a creamy filling, as the state's signature treat. Still, it raises the question: Is a Whoopie Pie actually a cookie? After all, it wasn’t chosen as the ‘cookie’ that ‘best represents’ Maine.
But how does one even decide which cookies go hand-in-hand with a state? And what does it mean for a cookie to 'best represent' a state?
A few years ago, as reported by USA Today in an article highlighting the cookies that 'best represent each state,' Nestlé Toll House surveyed over 5,000 people across the U.S. to choose the cookie that best represented their state from a list of 57 options.
USA Today reported on a survey by Nestlé Toll House that explored which cookies best represented each state.
The choices ranged from classic chocolate chip to more unique flavors like green tea and apple cinnamon. Based on the data, Nestlé created a list of cookies that 'best describe' each state, with chocolate chip being the most popular nationwide. However, Maine’s representative cookie was different, as the state didn’t follow the majority in selecting chocolate chip.
So, with that said, what cookie 'best represents' Maine?
According to USA Today, the molasses cookie is Maine’s signature cookie. Given the saying 'slow as molasses,' we’re not quite sure how to feel about that! USA Today had this to say about their choice:
Molasses has been a staple of Maine since the 1600s when it was a popular trade item.
