I Grew Up Scared to Go Near This ‘Haunted House’ in South Paris, Maine
When I was a kid, there were a lot of things that I was scared of.
There's the classic needle poke at the doctor's office that every kid was scared to get. Morgan Freeman as Dracula when he was a cast member on The Electric Company in the 70s on PBS made me run up the stairs in fear and even gave me a few nightmares.
This clip is the culprit:
There was another thing that scared me as a kid, which today I find silly. This house that I was convinced was haunted.
This Google Maps photo of the house was from 2012, and I haven't driven near it in quite some time, so this may not be what it looks like today.
This house is on a hill off Western Avenue in South Paris, very near the house I grew up in. Aren't all haunted houses on a hill?
Back in the '80s, we neighborhood kids felt it was haunted because we never saw the lights on and never saw anyone there. I don't remember who in the "Nichols Street Gang," decided to go up to the dark house, but they peeked in the windows and came running down thinking they saw a ghost.
I never even thought of going near the house after that.
As an adult, I know it's not haunted, but I looked up the house on Realtor.com and found that today it's lived in by what I am sure is a very nice family.
