Maine-Made Puff Snack is Delicious and Bonus – It’s Gluten Free!
Is this Maine-made snack not only delicious but good for the planet?
Toby Ahrens is the founder and president of Diggables, a Portland-based gluten-free buckwheat snack brand that is only a year old.
I found them at Whole Foods and bought the last two bags available!
I love a good crunchy snack as much as the next person, but often avoid them because of that whole weight thing. But when I read about Diggables, there's not a whole lot to avoid. Toby did an interview with Mainebiz about his business and how it's gluten-free!
How is this delicious Maine-made puff naturally gluten-free?
Toby didn't set out to make gluten-free snacks, he set out to make buckwheat snacks. But buckwheat just happens to be a seed, and it is naturally gluten-free. They buy as much buckwheat from Maine as possible sourcing a farm in Fort Kent.
I bought two kinds (the only two bags left!). I grabbed the white cheddar and the Maine Sea Salt. I once read you can judge a food by how many ingredients are in it. For the sea salt Diggables, it's buckwheat, sunflower oil, and sea salt. That's it.
Where can I find Diggables made in Maine?
They are in more than 100 stores, mostly in Maine and New Hampshire. They are working with an East Coast specialty retailer who will get their products out from Maine to Florida and even into the Midwest!
It's a good thing it's so tasty because the snack food market is very crowded. But Diggables has a claim no other snack food can make - they are the only buckwheat-based snack on the market. Buckwheat is the newest and hottest nutritional and sustainable food trend. Diggables is proving that you CAN make a snack that is tasty, gluten-free naturally and supports sustainable farming.
