The Price of Parking in Portland, Maine, is About to Go Up Once Again
Portland, Maine is a great place to visit. But it is not cheap, especially if you want to park in the city. Starting July 1, 2024, parking rates in Portland are going up again, but there is a sliver of good news.
According to WMTW, the City of Portland owns four parking garages: Elm Street Parking Garage, Spring Street Parking Garage, Temple Street Parking Garage, and Casco Bay Garage. Rates to park in those garages are all going up on July 1.
According to the City of Portland, hourly rates at the Spring Street and Elm Street parking garages will go from $3 to $4 per hour. If you're a month-to-month parker, you'r rate per month will increase from $150 to $160. The daily rate at the Ocean Gateway Lot will go from $20 to $25, the daily rate at the Thames St. Lot will go from $10 to $15, and the daily rate at the Fish Pier Lot will go from $10 to $15 (and the monthly rate from $140 to $150).
If that isn't enough, getting a parking ticket in Portland will also cost you more. Most parking ticket violations will increase by $5. However, commercial vehicle loading zone tickets will stay at $40. Tickets for parking in crosswalks or blocking fire hydrants will go up to $70, but you should be smart enough to avoid being socked with these increases.
The good news is that parking meter rates on the streets will remain unchanged at $2 per hour for most of the city. The area bounded by Middle Street, Pearl Street, Commercial Street, and Union Street (as well as the entire length of Commercial Street itself) stays at $2.50 per hour. Also, keep in mind there's a two-hour parking limit. You'll need to move to another block to park before it expires. May the parking gods be in your favor when looking for a space.
WMTW says the higher fees will generate hundreds of thousands of dollars of added revenue for the City of Portland each year.
