Another restaurant shutters in Portland, Maine.
The North Point, a restaurant and bar in Portland's Old Port closed permanently on Sunday, October 13. Just another in a string of long-established places in Portland and the surrounding area throwing the towel in.
The list is getting scary long of restaurants that just can't keep going after having success in Maine. The reasons for closing are familiar themes: rising costs, staffing, and COVID-19.
They made the announcement on their Facebook page.
Why are so many restaurants closing?
The Portland Press Herald noted that as fall kicks in, the busy season for restaurants in the Greater Portland area is over and they are heading into the slow months. With that outlook along with rising food and labor costs, the never-ending staffing problems and still recovering from COVID-19, the Press Herald is predicting more closures.
It's never an easy decision to close a restaurant in Portland, Maine
In the Facebook post, you can feel that this was not easy for The North Point. Dan and Noah Talmatch (brothers) opened The North Point back in early 2013. Dan said on Facebook,
The North Point has closed its doors for the last time. This decision wasn’t made lightly, but was made in light or rising costs, difficulty staffing, and generally decreasing sales. More info will follow, but for now, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all that have made The North Point a Portland staple for nearly 12 years. We're still loving you right back.
Thank you for the years that you were the go-to for so many of us looking for that delicious drink and beautiful charcuterie board.
