A town in Downeast Maine is receiving some great press from a popular online magazine.

The website The Travel published an article about the 16 most charming fishing villages in the country. One of the selections was the Hancock County town of Stonington.

Found on the southern half of Deer Isle, Stonington is a town of just a little over 1,000 residents. The island community is mostly known for its massive lobster production. It's consistently a top lobster processor in Maine, and one of the largest in the entire country.

However, Stonington is much more than that. It's also a town located right in the heart one of Maine's most beautiful areas. It's not far from both Midcoast Maine and Mount Desert Island.

The town also looks like it's right out of a reference book of what a small Maine island community should look like. Beautiful homes pepper the coastline, marine wildlife is prevalent, and did I mention all that lobster?

Here is a little of why The Travel included Stonington on its list of the most charming fishing villages.

The quaint fishing village receives many travelers every year. There are a good number of unique shops and gorgeous views on Main Street. Whether visiting this area of Maine as a family, traveling solo, or with friends, there are plenty of fun adventures to enjoy in this charming village.

While there are many visitors to the town, it's still nothing compared to some of the other coastal areas like Bar Harbor or those in the southern part of the state. Stonington is one special hamlet.

Stonington may be the only Maine town selected for this prestigious list, but it's not the only one from New England. Also receiving love was Mystic, Connecticut. The popular vacation spot is no stranger to great publicity, so it was not too surprising to see it on the list. Plus, you know, pizza.

Congrats to Stonington on making this prestigious list. I always love seeing the under-appreciated places in Maine receiving the recognition they deserve.
