End Of An Era: Portland, Maine’s Salvage BBQ Sadly Closing Its Doors
The fires will soon be put out at one of Portland most popular barbecue joints.
According to News Center Maine, Salvage BBQ is expected to announce its closure in soon. This will end a run over a decade of serving delicious 'cue in their iconic location.
Salvage had temporarily shut down this past winter due to financial constraints, but decided to give it another go this past spring. However, it looks like it was just not meant to be for this meat lover's paradise.
Salvage was quite the hit since opening over 10 years ago. The smokehouse not only specialized in mouthwatering smoked meats, but also incredible sides like mac & cheese, hush puppies, greens, chili, and much more. Plus, Salvage had an exceptional bar, with tons of local and regional craft beer and cocktails.
It was also an ideal location in a neighborhood that is home to Maine Medical Center, Hadlock Field, and the Portland Expo. It was easily one of the best pregame and postgame spots for a game, considering how close it was to the athletic venues.
I must admit, it was one of my favorite joints in Portland. Not only did I love the BBQ, but I also loved the atmosphere. It was a perfect place to enjoy a casual setting with family and friends, while noshing on tasty Texas-style BBQ.
My history at Salvage included numerous live radio broadcasts, meals with the in-laws, pregame gatherings before sporting events and concerts, and business lunches...which were really just excuses to go have a few cocktails and ribs before going back to work...don't tell my boss.
And then there was the time Salvage was featured on national television, and yes, I conned my way onto the show. Yeah, I'm that guy.
This is a tough pill to swallow. It's always rough to see a local business close down. It's especially difficult when you have developed a relationship and fondness for that shop when you love it so, and also have a relationship with the owner and crew.
Congrats to Jay and the staff at Salvage for years of wonderful meals, lasting memories, and television cameos (yeah, I went there again). Portland will not be the same without you.
