Fall in New England is a beauty to behold, it's true.  I've lived here my entire life and I still marvel like a tourist at the beauty of the trees around us every year.

This year, however, there is an extraordinary amount of acorns falling from our Oak trees.  Sometimes, they come down with such force, they will dent our cars.

And when I say "ours," I mean it.  This is the hood of my husband's Subaru.

You wouldn't think that an acorn could cause damage, but an acorn weighs about 1/2 an ounce and if they fall from 60 feet or so, they can cause some damage.  Not to mention how they can hurt when they hit your head.

When you walk in the woods, you might need a hard hat.

It's kind of like that theory about dropping pennies off of a skyscraper.  Would it kill you?  No, but it sure does hurt.

This year, acorns are particularly out of control.  According to cbs6albany.com, this is a "mast year" meaning that the trees are dropping the acorns that have been around for a couple of years.

There are apparently many reasons for a mast year.  It could be because of the number of rodents that depend on the acorns for food, the weather or insect infestation.

All I know is, every time I walk outside my door, I hear a cacophony of sound from hundreds and hundreds of acorns dropping all over my property.

I have to clean them up and so do you.  Otherwise, next year, we'll have more growing trees.
