Maine Residents Could See A $450 Relief Check

Even though we have seen the price of gas come down a little, energy prices overall continue to be outrageous. On top of that, the price of nearly everything is much higher than it was before the start of the pandemic. There is no doubt that nearly everyone in the country is feeling the effects of the massive inflation in some way.

Of course, as we enter the winter months here in Maine, one of the major causes of stress for many people is the price of heating their home.

It looks as though Governor Janet Mills' administration has a plan to alleviate some of that stress.

According to the KJ, the Mills administration unveiled a nearly $500 million emergency winter relief plan on Tuesday.

The plan is a series of short term measures designed to help low income and middle income residents make it through the winter.

Governor Mills said, in part:

Inflation and high energy prices are stretching the wallets of Maine people, in some cases forcing them to face the impossible choice of heating their homes, putting food on the table, or paying for other necessities. With this plan, we hope to ease the burden on Maine people by putting money back into their pockets so they can better afford these costs and by ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens are able to stay warm this winter.

In addition to providing extra funds for fuel assistance programs, providing funds to emergency fuel programs, and supporting emergency housing for the homeless, the program would also give eligible Mainers a $450 relief check to offset some of the drastically increased costs of heating oil, natural gas, electricity, and more.

Last week, Mills floated the idea of the relief checks. Under that plan, Under that plan, people earning up to $75,000 a year would get a $450 check, and married couples filing jointly earning up to $150,000 would get a $900 check.

Lawmakers continue to debate the plan. Two-thirds of lawmakers would need to support the plan for it to go into effect.
