Wednesday at 1pm in room 436 of the Maine State House, the bill to allow concealed carry of a handgun in Maine, without a permit, will have a public hearing. Senator Katz talked with us about that this morning and gave us a couple of updates as well.

A Maine senator wants to allow residents to carry concealed handguns without getting a permit. Sen. Eric Brakey of Auburn says that nearly 100 lawmakers, including members of both parties, have signed onto his proposal.

Officers in every other branch of natural resources law enforcement in Maine are trained annually and armed. They carry to protect themselves, and others as they go about enforcing Maine's laws. Forest Rangers enforce Maine's laws too, and even though their jurisdiction is the state's timberland, they're often investigating serious crimes such as theft and arson.

Whenever I need a nut, bolt, ammunition, fishing pole, fresh hamburger or a wedding dress, I ask myself, "I wonder if Hussey's would have that?" More often than not, the answer is, probably!

Even as their jobs have taken on the role of law enforcement in Maine's most remote locations, the state's forest rangers don't carry guns or even wear bullet-proof vests.
