Marisa Weinstein, music teacher at Warsaw Middle School in Pittsfield was surprised at a school assembly Tuesday, April 9. She was named the Maine Music Educators Association 'Educator of the Year.'

David Fabrizio, the principal at Ipswich Middle School (Massachusetts) is being criticized for canceling 'Honors Night' at the school. Parents were scared as word spread about a lockdown at Mill Stream Elementary School in Norridgewock, Monday March 4th. Over 100 parents crowded around a police perimeter and waited to hear news from inside the school.

A proposed bill would allow teachers and other school employees to carry concealed firearms in school. As you might guess, the bill raised questions among legislative leaders. First of all it would not be mandatory.

School is cancelled and I can still see the driveway. The Auburn School Department must have their reasons to cancel school today but it seems as though they could have gone ahead with a school day. At the risk of being cliche, it does seem we've gotten softer over the years in cancelling school.

School for thousands of public school students is about to get quite a bit longer. Five states will add at least 300 hours of learning time to the calendar in some schools starting in 2013. Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee will take part in the test.

I assume other elementary schools do the same or something similar. At my son Justin's school, Park Avenue Elementary in Auburn, basically every other Wednesday, has an assembly open to the parents, grandparents and guardians called, "Wednesday Morning Sing."
