We're all aware of just how bad this tick season already is and we're not even halfway through May yet. For us, last year wasn't even as close to as bad for ticks as this Spring has already been.
A lot of how bad the 'tick season' is has to do with the winter we just came out of...
With only 11 confirmed cases in 19 years, this rare virus was just confirmed in Southern Maine. It doesn't always have symptoms and can cause severe disease.
Researchers who were out looking for ticks say they were finding a one every square foot or so in the woods in Cape Elizabeth.
Vector Ecologist Chuck Lubelczyk said deer ticks, which can carry Lyme Disease, thrive in damp climates. If Maine continues to have a rainy spring, the ticks could continue to increase their numbers...
In Maine, ticks are on the increase and you should take precautions when you go for a jaunt in the woods. Cover exposed skin and, it's recommended that you check yourself for the critters once you're inside to make sure none have attached themselves to you.
I HATE TICKS! So this did nothing to make me feel better. The Northeast may have just escaped one of the coldest and snowiest winters to date, but that still will not reduce the risk of Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses.
Believe it or not there are benefits to the cold weather. Not just the skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing but there are some health benefits as well.
I have a friend and her mom has been sick for a few weeks. She was fine one day and within a few days she was in the ICU, she received the best of medical care and she passed away last week. It took less than two months. What caused all of this? A tick-borne disease called Powassan virus. This was Maine’s first documented case in about a decade.
I don't like ticks. Icky, gross and they can carry disease for people and animals. NOW it look like ticks are affecting us in cold weather too. They don't take a winter break.
The idea of ticks is gross enough, but the fact they are not just gross they can make you very sick, is very scary to me. Now I read that Lyme disease is about 10 times more common than previously reported. What?
I HATE ticks. They are disgusting little blood suckers. I have human friends who suffer from the effects of Lyme disease. It was a tick with Lyme that infected my old dog, CoffeeDog. I put CoffeeDog to sleep in 2006 because of Lyme related issues. In my book, ticks are gross. But they bring more than just Lyme.
