The body of a 25-year-old man was recovered from the ocean near Bar Island at Acadia National Park on Thursday morning, park officials confirmed.

According to WGME, the man, who has not yet been identified, had been reported missing since Wednesday afternoon.

According to park officials, a multi-agency search began around 5 p.m. Wednesday after the Bar Harbor Police Department received a report that a person was believed to be stranded on Bar Island. The island is connected to the mainland by a natural land bridge that becomes submerged during high tide.

Despite an extensive search Wednesday evening, WGME says responders were unable to locate the man and continued searching overnight. His body was found in the water late Thursday morning, according to Acadia National Park spokesperson Amanda Pollock.

The National Park Service is leading the investigation and said no additional information will be released until at least 72 hours after next-of-kin have been notified.

The Bar Harbor Story reported that the man’s cell phone sent a location signal from Bar Island. Two women also told the outlet they heard someone yelling for help late Wednesday afternoon. They said they called back to let the person know help was on the way before contacting emergency services.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death remains ongoing.
