These Cooling Centers Are Open in Central Maine Today
If you haven't already heard (or felt!), it's going to be wicked-hot in Maine today. Fortunately, even if you don't have an AC or a swimming pool, there are several options nearby to help get or stay cool today.
Before we get into the cooling center locations, I want to first remind everyone about the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Both can be very dangerous and lead to some less-than-desired outcomes.
According to the Mayo Clinic, heat stroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body overheats and can no longer regulate its internal temperature. Warning signs often begin with symptoms like a throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
Unlike heat exhaustion, people experiencing heat stroke typically stop sweating despite the intense heat and their skin may feel hot and dry to the touch. The clinic went on to explain that a rapid, strong pulse and body temperature of 104° or higher are also common indicators.
As heat stroke progresses, it can lead to disorientation, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, and even seizures. Immediate medical attention is critical, as untreated heat stroke can quickly result in damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles.
If you or someone else begins showing these symptoms during hot weather or strenuous activity, call 911 and begin cooling the person down with shade, cold compresses, or water while waiting for emergency help.
If you are in a place where you are exposed to extreme heat today and you need a place to cool down, there are multiple options throughout the region. According to the Kennebec Journal, the Augusta Civic Center, Cumberland Room will be open Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering cooling. Additionally, Waterville City Hall Annex, 46 Front St., Waterville will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In Lincoln County there is the Boothbay Harbor Town Office, the CLCYMCA and the Newcastle Fire Department all available and offering cooling services today, the KJ reported.
