So I guess I didn't realize this was already a thing, but apparently, several Maine school districts are already offering in-school health clinics.

Now, a central Maine school is looking to do the same thing.

According to WGME 13, Maine's Gardiner Area High School, part of Maine School Administrative District 11, is looking to add an on-campus health clinic for students and staff alike.

HealthReach Assistant Director of Operations, Diandra Staples, told WGME,

“We’re a primary care office just like you would go to your normal primary care office. We’re just located in a school. Out of our 181 students last year, we had seven that are confidential. They’ll probably remain confidential for their safety or because they may not have support at home.”

And this is where some pushback from a number of parents comes in to play.

WGME is reporting that some parents of students at the school say they are not keen on the idea, citing a Maine law that allows medical practitioners the ability to provide confidential care to minors for "certain services."

The opposing voices were highlighted on Tuesday at a community meeting where the addition of an on-campus health clinic was discussed for Gardiner Area High School. However, despite some opposition, it appears as though the majority of those in the community are supporting the plan.

WGME was reporting on Wednesday morning that to move forward with the plan, it does in fact require approval from the school board. An MSAD 11 board member said they expect to see a formal written proposal come before them in the next few months.
