Heavy rains have hit Central Maine this afternoon (Sept. 6) and that could lead to some flash flooding in Central Maine.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, heavy rainfall is expected in the area through tonight and these "torrential downpours" could lead to some flash flooding.

Bands of showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in the watch area and continue through tonight. Very heavy rainfall rates are expected at times, with 2 to 4 inches of rain possible by early Thursday morning. This is in addition to the heavy rainfall that fell in spots Tuesday afternoon and evening.
As a result, flash flooding will be possible along with a good
chance of urban and small stream flooding.

Kennebec County is under a flash flood watch until 8AM on Sept. 7.The weather service says a flash flood watch means "conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation."
