Maine’s Boxelder Bugs Are Back: Is Your Yard Being Invaded Too?

I thought we were done. 

Last year, there were barely any Boxelder bugs around my house, and honestly, I was thrilled. I had almost forgotten about my years-long battle with these little red-and-black freeloaders. 

And then this week I looked outside and thought… 

Oh. You’re back. 

And not just one or two. 

There are MULTIPLE. 

If you don't know what I'm talking about, years ago I wrote an entire article after discovering what appeared to be thousands of Boxelder bugs covering my backyard and the side of my house.

And when I say thousands, I am not being dramatic. They were EVERYWHERE. 

At one point, I described them as having what can only be called a very enthusiastic backyard romance. It was basically a Boxelder bug nightclub outside my living room window. 

I remember immediately asking Facebook what the heck I was dealing with, and I got SO many responses. I learned they're generally considered nuisance bugs, and I also learned that maybe reaching for the bug spray isn't always the best first move. 

So I left them alone and eventually, thankfully, they disappeared. 

UNTIL NOW. 

What's weird is that last year I barely saw them. And now they're suddenly back, hanging around my yard like they have a reservation.

Which brings me to my very important question: 

Are you seeing Boxelder bugs again this year? 

Did they disappear from your yard last year and suddenly return? Or have they been hanging around your house the entire time?

Because apparently, mine have decided they're ready for another season.
