Portland Harbor Flooded with Boats as Humberto Forces Reroutes
The Portland, Maine Harbor is much busier than normal this week.
As I stopped down by the Portland harbor near Gateway Pier, I peered out to expect the average daily number of boats, but I was shocked to see many many more as they fill the harbor for a layover.
The reason it’s busier than usual this week is because boats are being rerouted away from dangerous waters all caused by Hurricane Humberto.
And it’s affected all boats fishing, boats recreational vessels. Any type of boat has now been rerouted into our harbor, turning it into both a gorgeous view, but also a lively yet crowded scene.
Humberto is pretty far out into the Atlantic in Bermuda according to USA Today, so it’s not close but it’s still sending massive waves towards the Maine coast.
How will this affect us because it’s certainly affecting the traffic in our harbor.
Already we’ve had high surf advisories with waves offshore, reaching up to 8 feet and near the coast nearing 6 feet.

And those waves have created very strong, riptides and super choppy, which has led all of our new visitors into the harbor to play it safe until things calm down.
WGME's, Meteorologist Emily Santom tells us that this particular hurricane isn’t going to reach landfall here but the side effects if you will will certainly be felt along the way.

One couple that I spoke to said that they were on vacation, headed to the Bahamas, but after an unexpected stop in Portland, their first question was:
“Where can we see the lighthouses?”
Actually, every single person I ran into had asked the same thing. That's total proof that no matter where you are from, Maine's lighthouses is where everyone wants to stop on a layover.
Have you seen all of the boats? It is certainly a lovely view but hopefully they'll be able to get to their destinations soon.
