As 2025 begins, it hasn't felt much like winter for New England. While a major storm pummels the mid-east just south of us, we here in New England missed it completely thanks to a high-pressure system from the north that came down over us. Snowfall totals are far behind what they should be.

Look at these numbers from 2020 to 2024 from WMTW 8 Meteorologist Colleen Hurley. They show how much below normal we are for snowfall and have been for the past five years.

Colleen explains what's happening in this video.

Despite this week's frigid cold and wind chill, there's still not any snow on the ground in Southern Maine and not a lot in most of Maine.

That cold weather though got me wondering. What's the coldest it's ever been in each of the New England States? I went to the experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, better known as NOAA. They've got the data for the coldest temperature ever recorded in each state. Here's how cold it's been in the New England States.

Connecticut  −37 °F

New Hampshire is the second New England State to hit −50 °F. It happened at the top of Mt. Washington on January 22, 1885. And that temperature doesn't even count the windchill.

Rhode Island  −28 °F
