A new poll from the University of New Hampshire shows former Maine Governor Paul LePage holding very slim leads as the race for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District begins to take shape.

According to the survey, LePage is essentially neck-and-neck with several Democratic contenders.

WGME is reporting that the poll shows LePage leading state Senator Joe Baldacci by just one point, 48 percent to 47 percent. He also holds a razor-thin one-point edge over State Auditor Matt Dunlap, with 47 percent backing LePage compared to 46 percent for Dunlap.

Against Jordan Wood, who shifted into the congressional race after previously running for U.S. Senate, LePage’s lead widens slightly. The poll shows 48 percent support for LePage and 44 percent for Wood, WGME said.

The seat opened up after current Congressman Jared Golden, a moderate Democrat, announced late last year that he would not seek reelection, setting up what could be one of Maine’s most closely watched races.

With margins this tight, analysts say the contest is likely to remain highly competitive as candidates ramp up campaigning across the district, WGME reported.
