The Knox County Jail could see a major change in the next couple of years. According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the jail may stop housing inmates long term beginning in 2026, shifting instead to a partnership with Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

According to WABI TV 5, under the proposal, inmates serving longer sentences would be transferred to Two Bridges, while the Rockland facility would be repurposed as a short-term holding site for new arrests and temporary detentions.

Officials say the change is being considered as the county faces rising operational costs, which are projected to reach nearly $7 million in 2026.

Knox County leaders say the budget has been increasingly difficult to balance, and consolidating services could help reduce expenses while maintaining safety and efficiency.

WABI went on to explain that the move will likely lead to layoffs among correctional staff at the local jail. County officials emphasize they’re committed to helping affected employees find positions at Two Bridges or elsewhere in the county system.

The proposal is still being reviewed as part of the ongoing budget process, and final decisions are expected sometime next year.
